Claim Scenario - Burst Water Pipe

Burst water pipe and resulting damage claims are one of the most common property claims to family homes and commercial buildings within Australia.

Though the water pipe itself is not covered within most insurance policies, the exploratory costs and resulting water damage losses usually are covered.

Should you be unfortunate enough to experience a burst water pipe, you should turn off the mains water immediately and contact your preferred plumber. Should the burst be from a hot water pipe, simply close the valve of the hot water unit and contact your plumber immediately too. Once safe to do so, you should remove any furniture or general home contents away from the escaped water.

Advising your insurance company is the next priority, as the insurer will need to organise an assessor to investigate the damage and gather replacement/repair quotations for the resulting damage.

Organising a restoration / cleaning / disaster management contractor should be the final priority as they will need to dehumidify, clean and deodorise the water damage, to prevent any further damage.

Remember, that should you involve any trades people to repair/replace the damaged areas, it is very important that the tradesman writes down on the quotation how damage has occurred.

All other relevant information including photo’s should be passed onto your insurer too.

Your insurance broker can help you navigate your way through the claim from start to finish to take the stress out of an often disruptive process.
